We know that the most effective way to protect forests is to get local communities involved; they benefit directly from the forests and are motivated to protect them. We collaborate with local communities, governments and other organisations to expand protected areas, develop policy changes and create sustainable financing mechanisms.
We tackle the causes of deforestation at its source, from government and corporate policies affecting forests through to community forest management. We actively support sustainable farming and agroforestry, while making sure local livelihoods sustainably benefit from any changes.
Restoration involves both tree planting and natural forest regeneration, depending on the local environment. Making sure the right trees are in the right places, for the right purpose. We are strong advocates for natural regeneration, because letting nature run its course, whether alone or with a little help, continually proves to be more effective in terms of both biodiversity and cost.
Through on the ground action, partnerships and policy engagement, Trillion Trees conservation efforts can reach an estimated 402m hectares across 60 countries. And currently, these areas store an estimated 104Gt of CO2. These same regions provide vital resources and benefits for the 66 million people who live in them and are home to 2,485 important species that serve as indicators of Key Biodiversity Areas – species that rely on these remarkable ecosystems for their survival.
Trillion Trees has committed to ambitious targets, working towards achieving a stable climate where people and nature thrive together. Meeting these aims will require the support of and strong partnerships with governments, financial institutions, companies, civil society partners and most importantly, the communities living in and around forest landscapes.
